Senator Kathy Harrington has devoted decades to public service, civic engagement and strong family values.
In the community, she has worked as a victim advocate for children, consistently fighting for the defenseless against abuse and neglect. Devoted to the children of Gaston County, Senator Harrington also has served as a volunteer mentor, tutor and program coordinator to several schools. She has served on several community boards, including the Gaston County Board of Realtors Legislative Committee, Gaston County Museum of Art and History Board of Trustees, Gaston Dance Theatre Board and the Piedmont Community Charter School Board, where she served as Chairwoman of both the Governance Committee and the Interim High School Board.
Senator Harrington has more than a decade of political involvement behind the scenes. Throughout her many years with the Gaston County Republican Women, she not only has served as chairwoman of committees, but also as president and vice president of the organization. She was the local volunteer coordinator for President George W. Bush and volunteered for Congressman Patrick McHenry, Congresswoman Sue Myrick, and many other state and local elected officials.
Senator Harrington has received many awards, including “Gaston County Republican of the Year,” the Gaston County GOP Chairman’s “Award of Excellence” and the North Carolina Federation of Republican Women’s “Tribute to Women Award.” Because Senator Harrington has a history of staying connected with her constituency, the voters of Senate District 43 proudly refer to her as the “People’s Senator.”
Senator Harrington grew up in Gastonia, N.C., where she still resides with her husband of more than twenty years, former N.C. Rep. Michael Harrington. They are the proud parents of two daughters. When she’s not serving as a state senator in the North Carolina General Assembly, Senator Harrington is a licensed North Carolina Real Estate Broker.
